Tanzania safaris — what to expect

Tanzania hosts some of Africa’s best-known protected areas — Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and more — so a wildlife safari here works for couples, families and multi-generational groups. You do not need any special training: your guide plans the pace, routes and rest stops.

Days usually start early, when animals are most active. You explore in a closed 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for photography; by evening you return to a lodge or camp for dinner and a good night’s sleep before the next leg. Besides classic game drives, many itineraries can add optional experiences such as a hot-air balloon over the plains (where available), a guided walking safari in permitted areas, or visits to local communities — we tailor what fits your interests and park rules.

At Kibulu Tanzania Safaris we focus on private, tailor-made safaris: your dates, your pace, and an experienced English-speaking guide with you throughout. Tell us how many days you have and what you most want to see — we’ll shape a sensible route around the season and park conditions.

Northern circuit — at a glance

  • Serengeti — endless plains, big cats and the Great Migration for much of the year.
  • Ngorongoro Conservation Area — the famous crater floor and high wildlife densities.
  • Tarangire — riverine bush, baobabs and large elephant herds especially in the dry months.
  • Lake Manyara — groundwater forest, lake views and diverse birdlife.
  • Arusha National Park — ideal for a shorter day or add-on near Arusha (Meru views, colobus monkeys).

Southern circuits (e.g. Ruaha, Nyerere / Selous) and western parks are superb for longer trips or second visits — ask us if you want to go beyond the northern highlights.

When is the best time to go on safari in Tanzania?

Tanzania’s national parks are open year-round, but each month feels different: July is usually dry and busy, while November brings the short rains, greener scenery and fewer vehicles on the roads. April–May is the main wet season — dramatic skies and value pricing, with routes chosen carefully for road conditions. Tap a month for a snapshot.

JANUARY

MID-SUMMER IN TANZANIA

  • The short rains usually ease: hot, mostly clear days with the odd shower — the savanna stays green and game is spread across the parks.
  • For the Great Migration’s calving drama, the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area (near the Ngorongoro border) fill with wildebeest, zebra and gazelle — predators follow the herds closely.

Popular questions about Tanzania safaris

Straight answers we give guests when planning routes, seasons and logistics.

How many days should I plan for a safari?

For the northern highlights (e.g. Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro), 5–7 days on safari is a sweet spot: enough time for several ecosystems without rushing. Longer trips (10–14+ days) let you add more remote parks or slow the pace.

If time is tight, 1–2 days in Arusha National Park plus Tarangire or Manyara can still deliver strong wildlife. If Serengeti is a must on a short schedule, flying one or more legs often makes better use of your time than long drives.

What is the Great Wildebeest Migration?

Over a million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle move in a roughly circular pattern through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, following rain and fresh grass. Calving concentrates in the southern Serengeti / Ndutu area in winter months; later in the year herds push north and river crossings (Grumeti, Mara) become the headline drama.

Exact timing varies with rainfall — your guide and route should stay flexible.

When is the best time to see the migration?

The migration is a year-round story, not a single event. Calving is typically strongest around January–March; western corridor and Grumeti crossings often feature around May–June; northern Serengeti and Mara River crossings are often a focus roughly July–September before herds drift south again.

Use the month selector above on this page for a quick seasonal snapshot.

Which airport should I use?

Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Arusha are the usual gateways for northern-circuit safaris and Kilimanjaro. Dar es Salaam (DAR) is often more convenient for the southern parks, the coast and Zanzibar connections.

What should I wear on safari?

Neutral tones (khaki, olive, stone) help you blend in and hide dust. Avoid bright white for drives; avoid blue in tsetse-prone areas; camouflage-pattern clothing is not appropriate for civilians in Tanzania. Layers matter: warm jacket for cold dawn starts, sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

See our full safari packing guide for a checklist.

Can I leave the safari vehicle?

Only where park rules and your guide allow — picnic sites, camps, designated walking areas or official viewpoints. Stepping out randomly in the bush is not allowed: large predators and other wildlife are always a risk.

Can I fly a drone in national parks?

Recreational drone use in Tanzania’s national parks is heavily restricted. Professional filming permits are a separate, lengthy process. Bringing a drone without clearance can lead to confiscation at customs — check current regulations before you pack one.

Will I have phone or Wi‑Fi signal?

Many lodges and camps offer Wi‑Fi, but speeds vary and some properties limit bandwidth. In the bush, mobile data comes and goes with terrain and distance from towers. Tell family you may be offline during full game-drive days — that is normal.
